SALVATION ARMY STARTS SHELTER GARDEN

FAYETTEVILLE, NC, February 23, 2009: This Saturday, February 28, 2009, at 10am The Salvation Army invites all who are interested to attend a planning meeting for the proposed Salvation Army Love Garden. The meeting will be held at The Salvation Army Shelter located at 245 Alexander Street. The Love Garden will be used to supplement the shelter’s feeding program which is set to expand in March to provide two Love Meals per day, Lunch and Dinner.
Bonnie Plant Farms and Bell’s Seed Store have committed to partnering with The Salvation Army on this community project.

“The gardening project will help us to provide fresh vegetables to those who attend our daily Love Meals at the shelter. Fresh vegetables are a big expense for our shelter’s budget, so being able to have our own garden will be a huge blessing. We are in the beginning planning stages now, so we encourage anyone interested in volunteering to attend this Saturday’s meeting,” says Jackie Godbold, Director of Public Relations and Development.

The Love Garden will also be used as a teaching tool for families in The Salvation Army programs. The families in the Care Program for Domestic Violence and the shelter’s transitional program will be given the opportunity to cultivate their own garden plots to supplement their family’s meals. “The proposed Love Garden will provide many learning opportunities for families that we reach through our programs. Not only will we be able to supplement our Love Meals, but we will be able to help those who may not have the knowledge, means and space to cultivate their own fresh gardens.” explains Godbold.

Meeting information: Sat., Feb. 28th at 10am. 245 Alexander Street at The Salvation Army Shelter.

NEW OFFICERS TAKE COMMAND

JUNE 23, 2008.  FAYETTEVILLE, NC Majors Jerry and Betty Lyles have taken command effective June 22, 2008 at the Fayetteville area Salvation Army. The Majors come to Fayetteville after a five year command in Florence, S.C. Majors Lyles are veteran commanding officers, with 30 years of service to The Salvation Army. They have had commands in North and South Carolina, Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi.

Soon after, he realized the Army was his life’s calling.

After high school, Lyles attended The Salvation Army’s officer training college in Atlanta for two years before being commissioned.
